Meet Pact Collective. The first not-for-profit collection program for the beauty industry, by the beauty industry.
They collect hard-to-recycle packaging, find the best and highest use for the material, and prioritize getting the materials back into consumer packaging or durable goods over downcycling or chemical recycling.
We've joined up with Routine to support Pact in moving the beauty industry toward zero-waste-to-landfill, and towards circularity.
Any 4oz (118 ml) or less clean, empty, and unbagged beauty items, such as:
+ Plastic jars/pots, tubes, sticks, and small (e.g. travel size) bottles
+ Colored glass bottles and jars
+ Metal packages
+ Lipstick and lip gloss tubes, applicators
+ Mascara tubes and wands
+ Plastic pencil components (e.g. for eye/lip liner, brow pencils)
+ Makeup compacts (with nothing left in the pan)
+ Plastic caps
+ Ceramic containers
+ Lotion pumps, treatment pumps, all dispensers
Any items over 4oz (118 ml), such as:
+ Plastic containers when they are the size of a yogurt cup or larger with symbols PETE #1, HDPE #2, and PP #5 on them
+ Plastic packages that are smaller than 2” aren’t for curbside, but we can take them
+ Stainless steel or aluminum jars, bottles, and compacts
+ Clear or frosted glass bottles and jars
+ Cardboard and paper
+ Broken glass
+ Aerosol cans
+ Toothpaste tubes
+ Single use wipes
+ Plastic or foil safety seals
+ Plastic bags and wrappers
+ Plastic with foil/metal inlay
+ Nail polish and nail polish remover
+ Any medicine bottles, ointments, or OTC medical items
Despite being filled with cleaner ingredients, the vast majority of beauty product packaging will not be refilled or recycled. They will end up in landfills, incinerators, or the ocean.
This has to change.
